Happy Friday the 13th! This day may make you feel like you want to stay in bed all day, safely tucked away under the covers. But, instead of being superstitious, let’s be positive about today: May today be the Fridayest Friday that ever Fridayed. And that means, let’s get our summer weekend started! Yes, summer is still hanging on, so it’s nice to keep things light and simple. And, since sandwiches are so popular around here, we thought we’d do another round of them this week, so we can hang out at the beach a little longer. We’ve plantified some classic favorites, by turning them into crispy, crunchy, cheesy, tangy, smoky, savory, and spicy works of art! We're talking about an Ultimate Caprese Grilled Cheese, a Maxwell Street-Style Polish, and a Red Hot Roasted Buffalo Tofu Sandwich! |

Maxwell Street-Style Polish Maxwell Street Market first popped up in Chicago in the late 1800’s. It was an impromptu, open-air market set-up by newly arrived Jewish residents from Eastern Europe. They held the market every Sunday, and entrepreneurs came to sell their goods from push carts and card tables, offering everything from produce, to cars, to appliances. Thousands of visitors to the market were entertained by jugglers, card-tricksters and preachers. In the 1930s and 1940s, many black musicians, who migrated to Chicago from the segregated South—notably Louis Armstrong—played with local city musicians at the market, and eventually produced a new music genre—”Chicago Blues”. That’s so cool! Today, Maxwell Street Market is still going strong, with an eclectic mix of crafts, clothes, produce, art, music and more. You never know what you’re going to find! But one thing you WILL find, is some of the best street food in Chicago. Crowds at the market are always attracted by the constant aroma of grilled onions in the air, that are being loaded onto sandwiches, including the “Original Maxwell Street Polish”. We make a plant-powered version of this Chicago classic, with our delicious Smoky Sausage Links, which have all the right spices, tangy mustard, a pickle slice, a few sport peppers, and of course a handful of intoxicating grilled onions. Chi-town heaven! |

Red Hot Roasted Buffalo Tofu Sandwich Don’t worry! This sandwich is not a 5-alarm fire. We wouldn’t do that to you. We use Frank’s RED HOT sauce in this recipe to make our Buffalo Sauce, which has a kick that we love—but when mixed with creamy and cooling tahini, it’s dialed back a notch. We coat slices of tofu with our tasty Buffalo Sauce, and then roast them in the oven, so our sauce bakes on, and leaves the inside light and fluffy. We slather on some of our delicious Ranch Dressing, which also cools things off nicely, and top everything with our tangy Classic Sauerkraut. Talk about a flavor sensation. Holy Buffalo! |
